Another Brilliant summer in Alvor
Its ages since I last posted on here…a combination of too busy enjoying the sunshine or maybe a bit lazy, probably a bit of both….We are now safely berthed back in Lagos Marina where we will be spending the winter months after having a fantastic summer..
My last post ended with us sailing back up to Alvor from Gibraltar. We have pretty much spent most of the Summer here and had a really relaxing enjoyable time…it really is a great place…we still had days away and had a bus ride down to Albufeira to see what the place was like….very touristy obviously and we found the Marina to be quite a way from the town…so we can cross off coming here in Friendship.
June bless her, happened to mention to one of the yacht owners, Rory, who we had become friends with that since last winter I was now a qualified Scuba Diver and had all the equipment on board..his eyes lit up and he mentioned how he wanted to update and renew all his laid mooring equipment in Alvor bay…jump forward a week or two and there I was, along with Pedro, a serving Navy diver from Lisbon, on the seabed of Alvor screwing in 3 six foot steel poles into the mud seabed….not easy I can tell you…after a few hours the job was done and Rory was both pleased and grateful for his new mooring…I was left to clean off my kit and put up with the aches and pains for a few days again…I have now told June not to mention I have diving gear on board unless asking me first !!
In September we had our kids all come over for a weeks holiday with us…they had a great weeks weather and enjoyed a few lovely days on the beach, and June even tried to show them how she was now an expert body boarder…Not !!….we also all booked to spend one day at the nearby “Slide and Splash” water park…. I have now found one activity that weight…or more precisely having a little extra bulk has a huge advantage…suffice to say that when the multi slide became very competitive and a race to the bottom …I whopped them all and flew down.. after going on some of the more adventurous slides however I also discovered that I certainly am not as supple or hard wearing as I was when younger and had aches and pains and bruises for days afterwards….we all agreed it was great fun though.. The kids had decided for the week they were with us that they wanted to eat out every night instead of cooking on the boat…this was fine as one thing Alvor does have is some brilliant restaurant’s but after a week of eating out we and our waistlines needed an urgent rest.. We also sailed them round to Lagos for a couple of nights in the Marina so that we could show them around the sights and so they could see where we spend the winter months…It was Simones birthday whilst with us and as a birthday present we paid for her to go up in the motorised Paraglider that operates in Alvor…for 60 euro’s they take you on a 25min flight from Alvor down over Portimao and back again…I’m glad to report that she loved it.
The week as per usual went all too fast and it was time to wave them off home again until we go home in December for Christmas…
It was not long after the kids had gone home that we had another couple of our friends, Dean and Lesley come over for a week..Now anybody who knows Lesley will know just why I decided to come back round to Lagos marina for the week they were here, instead of ‘roughing it’ at anchor in Alvor…and I was right, Lesley is definitely one who loves the marina lifestyle….it was great to see them both and to see the surprise on their faces when they saw Friendship…”Oh we didn’t think it would be as big as that”…. I don’t think they had any idea of what our boat and life aboard was actually like and I think they imagined that, a, it would be a lot smaller and ,b, we would be roughing it…both of which couldn’t be further from the truth. I did actually sail them around to Alvor for one night at anchor which they both seemed to enjoy…and even used the dinghy to take them from the boat in to Alvor village…. I’m still not sure if Lesleys smile was pleasure or fear !! It was pleasing to see Dean now searching on the internet,…firstly to see if there were any boats he could imagine buying and learning to sail/live on…and then discussing with Lesley the more realistic plan to retire and buy a large motorhome to do just what we are doing, but to do it on land instead of the water…we even showed them around the motorhome van parks that you find at pretty much every major destination along the coast…just to show them others are doing exactly that!!
Well I certainly think both Dean and Lesley had a great time…so great infact that they have deliberately left their sun hats on board..for when they come back next time !!
The week after Lesley and Deans visit it was the end of September and we flew back home to attend our friends Sean and Natalies wedding… it was a great time and was great to catch up with my old work colleagues… Many thanks for the invite…it was a wedding I just had to attend mainly because I didn’t think it would ever happen !! I was very impressed Sean gave up the idea of a brand new flash car for making an honest woman of Natalie…the sacrifices us men folk make ! Seriously though best wishes to the both of them they are a lovely couple…I just wonder if Sean can get his new car before the sound of little feet come along though !
We are now well in to November and I have really been cracking on with my winter jobs list to the point of nearly getting them all done… I have bought a new aluminium hull dinghy which should fly now with my new outboard motor… we have met some lovely new couples in the marina which is very busy this year and made some plans with some of them to cruise down and in to the med next year and over winter in Cartagena Spain so next year is looking good… for now though we are relaxing and looking forward to coming home in December for a few weeks at Christmas…all in all life is pretty good.
